Sir James Dyson and his eponymous company, best known for its vacuums, have in recent years produced waves in the wonder planet using all the futuristic-looking  Dyson’s new $500 golden hair Drier, Clarified. While both products are colorful expensive, hyper-engineered, and intriguing to check at, neither is a glamorous item. This week, however, the company one-upped its own showmanship and declared that it will launch a Dyson Supersonic hair drier that’s literally gilded with 23.75-karat gold leaf, which will sell for about $499.99.

Though the news has not been reported widely yet, people are receiving word from the business through their inboxes. And they’ve thoughts. Twitter consumer @FannyLawren composed:”Who needs a gold hair drier? No one. But Crazy Rich Asians and the Celebrities might desire it. Fantastic gimmick! User @kylethepeck was a bit less diplomatic.

Do not get me wrong, I love my Dyson goods, but says”I am a rich asshole who doesn’t understand how to spend my money” just like a true gold plated hair dryer.

$500 seems an eye-popping sum for a hair application until you know that the regular, non-gilded Dyson dryer, which launched in the autumn of 2016, costs $399.99. And there is a version designed for professional hairstylists that’s $449.99.

So just how do the market for a luxury-priced golden hair dryer come about? It’s to do with savvy advertising, the ability of celebrity, and a certain photo of a chicken.

That he Dyson invaded a very insular Sector

Dyson, which will be well worth $5.3 billion, is well known in design circles also makes a splash any time that it establishes a new product because the business is very good at striking rollouts. But the Dyson hair dryer created a huge impression because the hot hair tool area is a fairly insular marketplace that does not often see new brands (T3, Conair, GHD, Hot Tools, Chi, Babyliss, and a handful of others rule ) — because it upended traditional hair dryer layout in ways the stalwarts hadn’t.

Rather than the engine being encased on top right near the nozzle, which then leads to the top-heaviness of traditional dryers, Dyson place a little motor in the handle. The nozzle complete with a pit in the middle is doughnut-shaped, and contains a barbell texture. The dryer that is Supersonic is made by this quieter, lighter, and much more ergonomic — also it looks like something you’d find in a Star Trek movie.

Though the design is brand new, tricking the tool at a metallic finish isn’t. Because there’s very little that could be done in order to change a blow dryer design-wise, companies have long driven sales by changing finishes and colors to match what’s trending in fashion. Metallic finishes are popular for a few decades, particularly rose gold — though Dyson could be the first to literally pay for the item in a precious metal.

As per a press launch, accompanied with an admittedly fascinating video, Dyson enlisted the support of a traditional guilder, a craft that dates back 4,000 decades, to hand-apply 23.75-karat gold foliage — a very specific karat weight picked by James himself — onto the nozzle. There is A glowing red primer applied and then the leaf brushed on top, so that if it wears down, the red shows through. The case fits the red primer, and the remaining part of the drier is blue. The entire thing is emblematic of the standard messaging of Dyson: We are extra in everything we do.
